When Keith Urban married Nicole Kidman four years ago, both of them were ready for a fresh start. Unfortunately, one of Urban's old habits got in the way: his addiction to intoxicating substances, including cocaine. On Monday's Oprah Winfrey Show, the country star opened up for the first time about the extent of his substance abuse -- and how his marriage to the Oscar-winning actress literally saved his life.
Keith Urban told Oprah that his much-publicized stint in rehab, which happened only four months into his marriage, was actually his third time in eight years. This time, however, it actually worked -- and the difference, he says, was "love." Kidman actually staged an intervention for her husband, gathering a few of his close friends to confront him.
"To see love in action to that degree ... I'd never experienced anything like that," Urban told Winfrey. ""It was really a profound moment in so many ways. The way in which Nic handled that moment was just perfect...Everything was just designed, I believe, for that moment to fuse us together."
Urban agreed to go to rehab the same day as the intervention, but he was terrified that being away from his wife -- after only four months -- would ruin his marriage.
""[I thought], 'Surely let's give it a few years so we've got some solidity, because this kind of thing could tear us apart,'" Urban recalled. "'This could just destroy us."
Instead, the marriage between the Australian-born stars emerged stronger than ever. In 2008, Kidman gave birth to daughter Sydney Rose Kidman Urban -- nicknamed Sunny -- now almost two years old.
"I look back now and realize Nic has taught me so much and brought so much into my life and opened my eyes in so many ways," the musician gushed when asked about his family. "[This is] the best place I've ever been."
In between their family time, the couple has been hard at work. Urban's new album, Get Close, was released this month, while Kidman's movie Rabbit Hole, in which she plays a mother learning to cope with the death of her young son, comes to theaters on December 17th.
