Golden Globes Snubs: Julia Roberts, Justin Timberlake, Leo Dicaprio

The Golden Globes had more than a few surprises this year with its nominations (The Tourist is a comedy? Burlesque is award-worthy?). But aside from who did get nominated, who didn't get nominated was just as surprising.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association loves its A-listers, so it's no shock that they'd want Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp on the red carpet, even if their movie, The Tourist, didn't have a strong showing at the box office (and it wasn't a comedy or musical despite the fact that it was nominated for best picture in that category). Burlesque brings Cher and Christina Aguilera to the awards, so that nomination makes a bit of sense too. But if we're going for big names, where's Julia Roberts for Eat Pray Love? That movie had women everywhere crying in their movie theater seats. Plus, it brought in nearly $7 million more than The Tourist did in its opening weekend, and Roberts received critical praise for her role as soul-searching Elizabeth Gilbert.

But it's not just Roberts who was left off the nominations list: Justin Timberlake was also snubbed. The moment The Social Network was released, Oscar buzz abounded for the star. Costars Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield are both up for Globes (best actor and best supporting actor, respectively), and the movie is nominated for best drama. Why was Timberlake's critically acclaimed performance ignored?

Then, of course, there's Leonardo DiCaprio for his mind-puzzling role in Inception. Despite the fact that the movie garnered four Globe nominations, the star who carried the movie (and campaigned for it to get nominated), was forgotten. Perhaps because he's been recognized at the awards seven times before, the Hollywood Foreign Press decided that his time was over? (And we'll just have to ignore the fact that he could have been nominated for both Inception and Shutter Island!)

And those (along with Jeff Bridges and Joel and Ethan Coen for True Grit) are just some of the big names that were omitted. In TV, HBO's True Blood didn't get any love though it's still very much in the zeitgeist. And if The Big C and Nurse Jackie were of Golden Globe quality, then where are the nods for Fox's Raising Hope, ABC's Cougar Town and NBC's Parenthood and Parks & Recreation? Perhaps more importantly, why wasn't the final season of one of the best dramas on TV, ABC's Lost, acknowledged at all?

While this year's Golden Globes nominations left some fans scratching their heads, we do know one thing for sure: The show, which is usually a predictor of what will happen at the Oscars, might not be such a clear crystal ball after all.
