UPDATE: The Kardashian sisters are disassociating themselves from the card, as Connecticut is now investigating the prepaid card for "predatory fees."
***************
Kim Kardashian has teamed up with MasterCard to create the Kardashian Prepaid MasterCard. Contrary to what you might assume, this isn't a card that only pays for clothes, shoes and bronzer. Instead, it allows parents to monitor their kids' credit card activity via cell phone. What's the connection between Kim Kardashian and financial responsibility, you ask?
It's a good question, because Kim herself was once the subject of a shopping intervention by her family on E!'s Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Kim also launched the hew card at New York City hot spot Pacha, instead of, perhaps, a kids' economics class. Lastly, the Kardashian Prepaid MasterCard is also endorsed by Kim's sisters, Kourtney and Khloe, who are also known for going on extravagant shopping sprees.
It seems as though Kim's only qualifications are that she likes to spend money and that she knows a bit about tweens from her interactions with Justin Bieber. Between shoots, the two probably talked extensively about high-yield bonds versus short-term treasury bills.
I don't meant to be so hard on Kim, who is a smart businesswoman and lends her name to a number of products. I just can't help but wonder if this venture makes sense. And if this new MasterCard does take off, who knows what other marketing marriages between celebrity culture and kid merchandise will be created? The last products I want to see are Mel Gibson cell phones, Snooki-branded encyclopedias, Lindsay Lohan ankle bracelets and Charlie Sheen career counseling services.
Should Kim Kardashian be endorsing financial responsibility? Chime in now!
