In-custody death of Pacoima burglary suspect under investigation

A suspected burglar died in police custody after being shot with beanbag ammunition in Pacoima, officials said Friday.

Victor Preciado, 32, of Van Nuys, died Tuesday, six days after he was shot by Foothill Division officers. Authorities said the officers fired the "less-lethal" beanbag rounds after Preciado ignored their orders to drop a pair of garden shears.

Preciado, who officers said appeared to be under the influence of drugs, was taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation. He slipped into a coma and died without regaining consciousness, officials said.

The cause of his death has not been determined.

The LAPD's Force Investigation Division is reviewing the incident.

Police arrested Preciado May 11 after receiving separate calls about a burglary at a car shop and a disturbance at a home in the 10600 block of Tamarack Avenue in Pacoima.

Police said they believe Preciado burglarized the shop, then was chased by residents to the Tamarack home, where he tried to break in.

Officials said the suspect appeared to be holding a knife - which turned out to be the garden shears - and ignored their demands in English and Spanish to drop the weapon.
