More than a dozen Southwest Airlines departures from Bob Hope Airport in Burbank and Los Angeles International Airport were cancelled or delayed Saturday, after a scare in the skies over Arizona that involved a torn fuselage, a steep plummet and an emergency landing.
Southwest is grounding 79 of its fleet of Boeing 737 jets, the same version of 737s as the plane that made a successful emergency landing at Yuma, Ariz., after part of its exterior skin and interior ceiling blew out.
Nationwide, 300 flights were canceled, and others were delayed up to two hours, the airline said Saturday.
At Bob Hope Airport, some flights to and from Sacramento, Oakland and Phoenix were canceled and flights to Las Vegas and San Jose were delayed, said airport spokesman Victor Gill.
Gill said more flights could be affected today. Sundays are generally much bigger travel days than Saturdays.
At midmorning Saturday at Los Angeles International Airport, six flights to Oakland, Phoenix or San Jose were listed as canceled. Another three were reported delayed, and 12 were listed as on time.
Forty percent of the outbound Southwest flights from San Diego were canceled or delayed, and five of the 11 checked outbound flights at Ontario were delayed or canceled. Similar delays were on the departure boards at John Wayne/Orange County Airport.
