Jacob Lusk shakes his tailfeathers
Over the last several months, American Idol has narrowed 125,000 hopefuls to a mere half dozen. We're now less than a month away from the 10th season's finale. And tonight, the Top Six will, separately and together, sing the songs of Carole King. Her tunes, Ryan tells us, have been recorded by more than 1,000 artists, ranging from the Shirelles and the 4 Seasons to the Partridge Family and Amy Winehouse. Now let's see how if the Idols will do her justice.
If Carole King wasn't enough, Jimmy Iovine brought Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds along to mentor the singers. If the segment on him's any indication, Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery, Casey Abrams and Haley Reinhart, James Durbin and Jacob Lusk will be tonight's duet pairings.
First up, though, is Jacob, with the Maxine Brown hit Oh No, Not My Baby. Loving Jacob's plaid jacket, blue vest and yellow shirt -- especially with the purple tie. Jacob starts the song slow in his falsetto, but it really catches fire when the band kicks in with their groove. Jacob has some support problems in this part of his range -- the falsetto especially becomes problematic at times -- but it's a fun, energetic arrangement. A nice change of pace from the serious stuff we usually get from him.
"We all knew you could sing," says Steven Tyler. "It's about time that you shook your tailfeathers. ... When you strut like that, that's the magic."
Jennifer acknowledges that the performances was perfect, but says, "You just killed it, really."
"You really brought yourself back," says Randy. "The scatting was incredible, and that's why you're here."
Still, Jacob's almost surely coming to the end of his journey on Idol, though, so a fun performance and generally -- though not overwhelmingly -- positive from the judges may not be enough to save him, since he's in the dreaded opening slot. He'll just about have to hope for somebody else to stumble.
