Lady Gaga apologizes for using the word 'retarded' in an interview about ripping off Madonna.

You knew it was coming.

Just one day after Lady Gaga called speculation "retarded" that her "Born This Way" rips off Madonna's "Express Yourself," she has apologized for using the offensive word.

In a statement to gossip blogger Perez Hilton, Gaga said: "I consider it part of my life's work and music to push the boundaries of love and acceptance. My apologies for not speaking thoughtfully. To anyone that was hurt, please know that it was furiously unintentional. An honest mistake, requires honesty to make."

She then went on to quote "Born This Way," the song in question. "Whether life's disabilities, left you outcast bullied or teased, rejoice and love yourself today."

Gaga used the R-word in a NME interview in which she defended her hit song -- and her songwriting abilities.

"I've written loads of music. Why would I try to put out a song and think I'm getting one over on everybody? That's retarded. What a completely ridiculous thing to even question me about."
