LAPD releases video of 2 women stealing wallet from baby stroller in downtown LA

LOS ANGELES - Police today released security footage showing two women stealing a wallet from a baby stroller at a downtown Los Angeles swap meet by distracting the child's mother, and who may be responsible for a series of similar crimes in the area.

The surveillance video involved a crime in the 500 block of South Los Angeles Street.

The suspects, described only as middle-aged Hispanic women, "first size up their victim, which in this case was a mother with her 23-month-old toddler inside a stroller," said Los Angeles police Lt. Paul Vernon."Her husband is seen standing nearby."

The women began distracting the mother, and one woman approached the stroller and grabbed a wallet while the other woman blocked the victim from seeing what was happening, Vernon said.

"We've identified a trend in these kind of thefts over the last several months, and we want shoppers to be more aware," Vernon said.

Detectives suspect the women live in the area, and urged anyone recognizing them to call Detective Mike Mazzacano at 213-972-1231, or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
