Eds: At 8 p.m., Sgt. Tom Lorenz of the Glendale Police Department will be available for interviews at Sylvan Street and Colfax Avenue in North Hollywood.
NORTH HOLLYWOOD - Two Glendale police detectives on a surveillance in North Hollywood today witnessed an unrelated armed robbery on the street and shot one suspect and took the wounded man and another suspect into custody.
The detectives saw an armed robbery at Sylvan Street and Colfax Avenue about 4:15 p.m. and intervened, said Sgt. Tom Lorenz of the Glendale Police Department.
The wounded suspect was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Lorenz said.
The two suspects may be responsible for a series of street robberies in North Hollywood that have plagued the area for a while, Lorenz said.
"Our detectives were minding their own business, but when you're in plain clothes, you end up seeing a lot of things," Lorenz said. "It was unfortunate for the suspects but fortunate for the victim."
Glendale police and the District Attorney's Office will investigate the shooting. Los Angeles police detectives from the North Hollywood Division will handle the robbery investigation.
